The timing belt is an important part of the vehicle. It provides the connection between the crankshaft and camshaft, i.e. it is necessary for the transmission of torque and the synchronous operation of the shafts. It’s not always a good idea to try to repair your car. Sometimes it should be recycled: https://scrapmycarnear.me.
The timing mechanism itself plays an equally important role, so its operation should be closely monitored. The timing belt replacement algorithm is clearly described in the car manual. However, many car owners prefer to trust this procedure to masters, although everything can be done in an ordinary home garage with your own hands. It is only necessary to understand how to change the timing belt – when it should be done, in what sequence perform the work.
When to change the timing belt
If the timing belt was originally of low quality, if it was operated with violations of the rules, if stains of technical fluids appeared on its surface – this can lead to belt breakage.
Urgent replacement of the timing belt is performed in such cases:
on the surface of the belt appear cracks and bulges, other signs of wear,
tears, oil stains, etc.
Belt delamination, frayed ends.
The timing belt and rollers are also replaced. If there are oil stains on the surface of the belt, it is likely that the oil seals must be replaced as well.
The frequency of scheduled replacement of the timing belt is specified in the technical documentation for the car and depends on the specific brand. Some experts recommend replacing the VAZ timing belt every 50,000 km of mileage.
How to change the timing belt of the car with your own hands
Before starting the work, it is worth watching a video to learn what all the parts you will have to deal with look like. You should also take into account that the engine can have both 16 and 8 valves. Where a 16-valve engine is installed, there are two camshafts. The belt on such an engine is larger than an 8-valve engine because it still goes through a guide roller.
In order to change the timing belt, the following algorithm is used:
Turn off the key in the ignition, lift the hood and remove the battery terminal to “minus”. There are models in which it is not possible to disconnect the terminals. Then you will have to work without disconnecting, but be careful.
To ensure free access to the necessary parts, remove the wheel, alternator belt and motor cover. In some models, you will also have to remove the hydraulic fluid tank, air intake or other parts.
Using a hexagon, unscrew the screws securing the cover that protects the belt.
If the machine has a crankshaft position sensor, it must be removed.
Remove the tensioning roller of the timing belt and the guide roller.
Remove the old timing belt.
Check the position of the marks on the engine camshafts in comparison with the position of the marks on the drive housing. If they do not match, they are aligned in the appropriate position.
It is necessary to change the belt for a new one. The timing belt is thrown on the crankshaft pinion and winding on the support roller, and then on the camshaft pinion and the pump. All the time check the marks.
Install the tension pulley, but the bolt is not tightened as far as it goes. Check if the belt is installed evenly, and then tighten the bolt up to the stop.
All removed parts are installed back.
When everything is installed, the engine is started to check the operation. If everything has been done correctly, there will be no extraneous sounds.
Theoretically, there is nothing complicated about replacing the timing belt. You just need to act carefully, without missing important steps. But if the owner of the car doubts his skills, then it is better to contact the professionals.
